A neglected garden is habitat. Nesting birds are legally protected from roughly March to August, and hedgehogs, slow worms and bats all use exactly the sort of undisturbed cover a neglected garden provides. In practice that means checking before cutting, working so wildlife can move out, and occasionally deferring part of the work. It is not a formality and it is not a delaying tactic — it is how the job is done properly.
