• And it keeps the hedge dense rather than cycling between overgrown and bare

Staging a Reduction in an Established Garden

• Height one season, sides the next is the standard approach on a severe cut
• It gives the hedge a full growing season to respond in between
• It lets you see the result before committing to the second stage
• And it changes the light gradually, which matters where planting has grown up in the hedge's shade
• It costs more across two visits and produces a considerably better hedge

What Changes the Answer

• Species. A conifer past its green growth may not be reducible at all
• Condition. A hedge bare at the base will not fill in simply because it is cut
• Age. Very old neglected hedges sometimes suit laying or replacement better
• Access. Reduction needs more room to work and more space for arisings
• Time of year. Reductions suit late summer or autumn

When Neither Is the Answer

Occasionally a hedge has gone too far. A conifer screen cut past its green years ago, or a hedge with a permanently bare base and no live growth low down, may be better replaced than reduced. Replanting takes years to screen again, so it is not a light decision — but it is sometimes the honest one, and we would rather say so than take money for a cut that will not achieve what you want.
