Preparation decides whether the lawn roots, drains and stays level. Turf laid on well-prepared ground thrives on ordinary care; turf laid on poor ground struggles no matter what you do afterwards.
And it is one-directional. Levels, drainage, soil depth and compaction cannot be corrected once the turf is down without lifting it again.

Ground that is not firmed settles unevenly under its own weight and under rain, so a lawn that looked flat in March is dimpled by June. Firming is done by heeling or rolling, then raking again, and it is repeated rather than done once. It is tedious work with nothing to show for it, which is exactly why it is the step most often skipped — and exactly why so many new lawns end up bumpy within a year.

On a straightforward garden, preparation and laying can be the same visit. Where rubble has to come out, topsoil has to come in, or drainage needs attention, preparation is the larger part of the job — and turf is then ordered for the day it will actually be laid, because turf left rolled on a pallet deteriorates within a day or two, faster in warm weather. Turfing is scheduled around the ground being genuinely ready, not the other way round.
